10 Feb - Isaac shows off his new KidWalker

Two year old Isaac suffers from Dystonic Cerebral Palsy a condition that affects the ability to control muscles and walk unaided. All Isaac wants is to be up and walking independently and his brand new Kid Walker is enabling him to do just that!

When asked what difference the KidWalker has made his mum Sarah said: Just to know that he’s going to be doing what any other toddler is doing – exploring!

Being able to get himself up to his toys and into the garden … just to have that little bit of independence. He’d be so tired and cranky but put him in his walker and he’s just like instant smiles and happiness and he has that extra burst of energy – he loves it!

Funded by the Epping Eastwood Lions Club in conjunction with the Australian Lions Children’s Mobility Foundation the KidWalker has expanded Isaac’s world. Isaac's Mum hopes that one day he will walk independently.

18 Jun - Mal & Shirley Ellis awarded a Ministerial Mention for their charity work

On Wednesday 18th June our very own Mal and Shirl Ellis were presented with a Ministerial Mention for their work with Touched by Olivia Foundation.

The Hon.Victor Dominello MP presented the award and will read the citation in Parliament where it will be forever recorded in Hansard.

As there have only been three of these awards presented in the greater Epping, Eastwood & Ryde area over the past four years, this is extra special.

John and Justine Perkins from Touched by Olivia Foundation were the instigators of this award and thanked Mal & Shirl for their work with BBQs and the Christmas lights.

    May - ERNA Netball BBQs

The ERNA season is off to a great start with sales up about 10% on last year. The new bain marie set up for keeping food warm is working very well and giving more cooking room on the BBQ which has given us the capacity to keep up with growing demand.

The Touched by Olivia Foundation Family Fun Day BBQ held on Sunday 18th May was a great success. We had the pleasure of Roy Maggio, the Ryde Mayor, cooking and serving with us for three hours. He is looking forward to helping out at ERNA in the not too distant future. The children and families enjoyed beautiful weather, a great sausage sizzle, a huge cake and plenty of fun activities. We raised $410 in donations which was given directly to the organisers.

25 Apr - Anzac Day Service

Seven members of the Epping Eastwood Lions Club attended today’s Anzac Service at Forest Park, Epping. The threatened showers did not eventuate and there were about 500 people in attendance.

The participants assembled before dawn, lit by 2 street lamps in the park. As the dawn began to break and the figures became clearer, the sombre mood seemed to lift so that by the time the service concluded, those in attendance seemed to be quietly cheerful.

The service followed the standard format which never loses its poignancy. Wreaths were laid by a substantial number of individuals and organisations including the one from our Club.

Afterwards, most of our members adjourned to the Epping Club for a hearty breakfast.

As has been noted by many commentators, it was wonderful to see so many young people in attendance although the organisation of the event still seems to remain in the hands of the veterans who are now really beginning to show their age.

13 Apr - ERNA Netball BBQ

Dry, wet, dry, wet, what a confusing start to the ERNA season. After two busy weekends, with Gala Days on both Sundays, we are well on the way to a great season. Our regular customers are back for more fun and teasing while they wait for their sandwiches.

Our new food warmers look very professional and give the cooks more space on the BBQ. This enables the cooks to keep up with customer demand without too much pressure from the serving staff.

Meat tray tickets are selling well, with one happy customer winning two in one day!

6 Apr - Angel making Workshop

What a fantastic day filled with fun, frivolity and crafting.

Somehow amid all the talking, eating and cups of tea each one of us managed to produce a beautiful angel! Of course we could not have done it at all without our wonderful tutor Kath who was there to guide our every move.

A big thank you to Kath for her patient tutoring, to Rosemary for the venue and morning tea and to Shirley for organising the event and providing us all with such yummy sandwiches!

29 Mar - Raul Vellani: Three times a winner

Three times a winner already, Raul Vellani is off to Nambucca Heads to compete in the State Final of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest.

Raul Vellani, from Normanhurst Boys’ High School has once again beaten his opponents in the Lions District 201N5 Youth of the Year Quest. The standard of contestants at the district level was outstanding, with students drawn from across the Sydney basin.

Epping Eastwood Lions Club has supported Raul throughout the three levels of competition and will once again be there to cheer him on at the State Final. The Lions Youth of the Year Quest is designed to find students with leadership and community skills. It allows students to improve interview skills, gives them an opportunity to speak to people of all ages and interests as they progress in their scholastic and professional endeavors.

  • 16 Mar - Kuring-Gai Chase Fun Run and Barry Easy Walk

This event is a community fun run and walk held by Special Olympics Upper North Shore organization to raise money to help over 200 special athletes achieve their potential.

Epping Eastwood Lions Club supported the event by providing BBQ services.

By 8.30 am, the bagpipes, drums & fifes of the Know Grammar School Pipe Band were providing a rousing musical backing during the BBQ set up in leafy Claude Cameron Grove Wahroonga.

Sausages and onions were cooked to perfection by the time hungry participants arrived back from their run. There were queues - but our team, assisted by Knox School boys & event volunteers dealt with them efficiently. Happy smiles and words of gratitude told the story of another EELC BBQ success, as hundreds of sausage and onion sandwiches were speedily devoured.

2 Mar -Donate for Life BBQ

A worthwhile event held over two days at two Bunnings venues, simultaneously promoting Organ Donation and fundraising for Lions Club. The Artarmon crew worked to the max on Saturday, while dreary weather and showers on Sunday kept customers numbers down at North Parramatta Bunnings. Promoting Organ Donation while serving sausages proved challenge...but the suggestion to "Sign up now, Donate in 50 years" seemed the most appreciated tactic!

16 Feb - YMCA Family Fun Day

The Epping YMCA recently introduced a GymAbility Program – a recreational and competitive gymnastics program for people with intellectual and physical disabilities.

Hearing that the Y were looking to purchase additional equipment for the program our club stepped in providing the funding for the purchase of a Tunnel Slide IV Combo – a secure bounce house with pop ups & two slides.

Children attending the YMCA Epping’s Family Fun Day on Sunday 16th February were among the first to experience the new equipment.

“The new equipment will help the Y to continue to provide and further develop quality programs and services.

    23 Jan - Wyong Races

In the spirit of collaboration and friendship the Wyong Lions Club hosted a lunch and social day for us at their "Shed" located in the grounds of the Wyong Racing Club. As a race meeting was also in progress a number of our members also managed to have a "flutter" on the ponies.

A variety of methods were used to pick a winner. Some relied on evidence including blood lines, wins over the distance etc. Other relied on colour, general apprearance etc. Each method had equal success and failure!

All in all a great day! Thanks again to Rus, Kath and club members!
